This watercolor was created in 2003, first as the effort to learn from copying Cafe at Arles by Van Gogh, in a medium other than the one it was painted in,oil. Not long after , on my way to Puerta Vallarta from Ajijic , where I lived, I stopped in a village along the way and viewed a group of women in a prayer gathering in early evening, under an awning in front of the local restaurant. It reminded me of Cafe at Arlres in the setup of the scene. I came back to this painting, which I may have discarded as practice, and reshaped it a little to accomodate
the prayer meeting scene I had seen. It was sold in 2003 .
I am self taught. I have painted fulltime since 2001 , beginning in watercolor. Many images of the first years were done with my eyes closed. This was about being called, or engaged ,by the sense perception that is mindless, free of image . It required listening to this wordless subtle sense and put marks down on the paper without second guessing. Each year until recently I created a series of work that were shown and selected pieces chosen for a print series. I now work mainly in pastel and oil but not exclusively. I see these series as being the building blocks in this process of becoming an artist from the inside out .
