This floral in a vase is of the genre of abstract expressionism .Begun in 2012 as copying a floral in vase of Cezanne to learn from him, when done I was surprised by the degree to which I had NOT captured what I loved in his painting.Now, two years later, I began again, fresh perspective, no Cezanne. It began with the challenge to use heavy black outlines, then evolved into a piece of both definition and openess. July 2014
About Studio Tolere
I am self taught. I have painted fulltime since 2001 , beginning in watercolor. Many images of the first years were done with my eyes closed. This was about being called, or engaged ,by the sense perception that is mindless, free of image . It required listening to this wordless subtle sense and put marks down on the paper without second guessing. Each year until recently I created a series of work that were shown and selected pieces chosen for a print series. I now work mainly in pastel and oil but not exclusively. I see these series as being the building blocks in this process of becoming an artist from the inside out . Chana, I haven't been on FAA much for months or more...but this i one of the best on the site. I know I have commented before but this stunning piece is mesmerizing. When I do dark lines it seems like outlining and contraining the design....Your bold and think lines are so inherent and organically part of the space that it is amazing...and the colors? Lush. I was thinking this should be in a museum but I bet more people can enjoy it here!

Thank you Betty. Roualt was a favorite for me since I was a teenager. I was always amazed at how he could put such thick dark lines around the image and it was, as you say, mesmerizing.and inherent. Something very odd about the use of black lines,, like the black has it's own mind and combines with one's own.

What beautiful colors you used. I love the blues and pinks. Generates a happy mood. I also like the crisp clean lines separating the objects from one another through outlining. Could be used on a stained glass window. Love it.
