This 16 x 20 inch watercolor was done as part of a class at the Art Students League in New York with the abstract expressionist master teacher /artist Frank O'Cain, who stood firmly in the lineage of Hans Hoffmann, teacher of his teacher Vylacil, at the Art Students League in the 1930's NYC. This is part of a series of three,created using a room length still life creation, as Hoffmann had done with his students then. . His principal students were important contributors to the modern art movement of America.
I am self taught. I have painted fulltime since 2001 , beginning in watercolor. Many images of the first years were done with my eyes closed. This was about being called, or engaged ,by the sense perception that is mindless, free of image . It required listening to this wordless subtle sense and put marks down on the paper without second guessing. Each year until recently I created a series of work that were shown and selected pieces chosen for a print series. I now work mainly in pastel and oil but not exclusively. I see these series as being the building blocks in this process of becoming an artist from the inside out .
