Artist's Description

Painted in 2012 on a return to a Mexican village. I spent years in Mexico and for part of that time was a dancer within the mestizo spiritual dance traditionThe mestizo tradition is what formed at the time of the Conquest when native dances and instruments were not allowed. The people were allowed to use a guitar as given by the priests,and they formed their own version of it using the shell of the armadillo or of a very large type of squash. They had to sing in Spanish and only to honor Christ, the Virgin and different saints of the Catholic Church . Our group, formed of people of the mountains and the city, mestizo and pure native, would dance in one village then another , in the mountains, by the volcanoes, even in the Basilica of Guadalupe on her birthday December 12. For many dancers, Spanish was their second language, and their lives were of a time before technology. I am self taught. I have painted fulltime since 2001 , beginning in watercolor. Many images of the first years were done with my eyes closed. This was about being called, or engaged ,by the sense perception that is mindless, free of image . It required listening to this wordless subtle sense and put marks down on the paper without second guessing. Each year until recently I created a series of work that were shown and selected pieces chosen for a print series. I now work mainly in pastel and oil but not exclusively. I see these series as being the building blocks in this process of becoming an artist from the inside out .
