This is one of a series of paintings developed around the lily and koi pond theme in an impressionist yet abstract manner. I was able to observe and photograpgh a lily pond daily over a few years,seeking to absorb the sense of movement iprovoked by the koi and lilies, and the wind, as well as the reflection from underneath the surface that happens as light moves around. on the top.
I am self taught. I have painted fulltime since 2001 , beginning in watercolor. Many images of the first years were done with my eyes closed. This was about being called, or engaged ,by the sense perception that is mindless, free of image . It required listening to this wordless subtle sense and put marks down on the paper without second guessing. Each year until recently I created a series of work that were shown and selected pieces chosen for a print series. I now work mainly in pastel and oil but not exclusively. I see these series as being the building blocks in this process of becoming an artist from the inside out .
